Three Georgia state parks within an hour of Atlanta each sit in a different direction and tell a different story. Sweetwater Creek, west in Lithia Springs, follows a stream to the brick ruins of a textile mill burned during the Civil War. Red Top Mountain, northwest on Lake Allatoona, is named for red soil heavy with iron ore and was once a mining area. Fort Yargo, east in Winder, keeps a log fort settlers built in 1792. This is the outdoor half of the day. The eating half is at the end: one table on the way back from each park.

$10Parking per vehicle at every Georgia state park. An annual ParkPass is $70 and covers all of them, but not the state historic sites.

7 a.m.When all three open. Sweetwater Creek and Red Top Mountain close at dark; Fort Yargo stays open until 10 p.m.

We run State Park Near Me, a directory of every state park in the country, and we are a guest here. Top of Atlanta asked for the parks. They supplied the restaurants.

The day, in order

Georgia charges by the car, not the person, so a full car costs the same $10 as one driver; if you plan to visit more than a few times a year, the $70 annual ParkPass pays for itself. All three parks open at 7 a.m. Sweetwater Creek is close enough for a morning, about 14 miles west on the I-20 side. Red Top Mountain, up I-75, and Fort Yargo, out toward Athens, are each worth a full day. Sweetwater Creek and Red Top close at dark, which comes early in fall, so start early there.

Sweetwater Creek

The state calls it a peaceful tract of wilderness only minutes from downtown, and the main trail earns that: it follows the creek through the woods to the ruins of the New Manchester Manufacturing Company, a textile mill burned during the Civil War, then climbs rocky bluffs above the rapids. Walk around the outside of the ruins on your own; the interior is open only on guided hikes, school trips and special events. There are 15 miles of trails in all, through ferns, magnolias, wild azaleas and hardwoods, and rangers lead hikes through the year. The 215-acre George Sparks Reservoir is for fishing and feeding ducks, not swimming, and boats there run on electric motors only. The park is open 7 a.m. to dark.

This is the lake park: 1,776 acres on the 12,000-acre Lake Allatoona, with a sand swimming beach in a tree-lined cove and room to fish, ski and boat. It is also a hiker’s park, with more than 15 miles of trails, and the 4-mile gravel Iron Hill Trail is open to both hikers and bikers along the shoreline. A short paved trail behind the office, fine for wheelchairs and strollers, leads to a reconstructed 1860s homestead. The name comes from the soil, red from its iron ore, and the area was once an important mining district; the park occasionally holds iron pour demonstrations by the Vaughn Cabin. It is open 7 a.m. to dark, and the office 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Fort Yargo

Between Atlanta and Athens in the town of Winder, the park is built around a log fort that settlers put up in 1792 for protection against the Creek and Cherokee. The rest of its 1,816 acres is recreation: a 260-acre lake with a large swimming beach, fishing and two boat ramps, plus mountain bike and hiking trails, disc golf and mini golf. The mountain bike trails post their status online, so check before you load the bikes. The splash pad is closed for maintenance. The park is open 7 a.m. to 10 p.m., the latest of the three, and the beach area from 9 a.m. to sunset.

Where to eat after
